บนท้องถนนในกรุงเทพฯ ร้านน้ำชาไทยทุกแห่งจะมีที่เขี่ยบุหรี่รูปช้าง ท่ามกลางกลุ่มควันสีเขียวที่ลอยขึ้นระหว่างหัวช้างที่ปิดทอง ภาชนะใส่เถ้าถ่านนี้แสดงให้เห็นถึงภูมิปัญญาการเอาชีวิตรอดซึ่งมีต้นกำเนิดเดียวกันกับธงชาติไทย ในธงไตรรงค์ไทย สีแดงหมายถึงความมุ่งมั่นในการอุทิศตนต่อชาติ สีขาวหมายถึงศรัทธาอันบริสุทธิ์ในพระพุทธศาสนา และสีน้ำเงินหมายถึงความมั่นคงของพระราชอำนาจ ช้างมิใช่เพียงแต่เป็นสัตว์ศักดิ์สิทธิ์คู่บ้านคู่เมืองในประเทศไทยเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นพาหนะของพระโพธิสัตว์ผู้แบกรับกรรมของสรรพชีวิตในพระพุทธศาสนาอีกด้วย เช่นเดียวกับที่เขี่ยบุหรี่รูปหัวช้าง เมื่อพลุไฟดับที่เขี่ยบุหรี่จะแบกถ่านไว้ด้วยหลังกว้าง เฉกเช่นท่าทีของคนไทยเมื่อเผชิญกับความยากลำบาก คือ ความยืดหยุ่นช่วยคลี่คลายความเข้มแข็ง ความอดทนช่วยคลี่คลายความทุกข์ ทาวี ช่างทำเครื่องเงินในเชียงใหม่ เคยกล่าวไว้ว่า “ช้างตัวจริงไม่กลัวประกายไฟ พวกมันรู้วิธีเปลี่ยนความเจ็บปวดที่แผดเผาให้กลายเป็นเกราะป้องกัน” รอยไหม้ที่ด่างพร้อยบนพื้นผิวของที่เขี่ยบุหรี่เปรียบเสมือนตราสัญลักษณ์ที่ผุกร่อนบนธงชาติ ซึ่งบันทึกเส้นทางการนิพพานและการเกิดใหม่ของชาติ จากวิกฤตการณ์อาณานิคมไปจนถึงอุทกภัยครั้งใหญ่ ประเทศไทยยังคงสามัคคีกันดั่งฝูงช้าง เปลี่ยนทุกการเผาไหม้ให้กลายเป็นประกายไฟที่สร้างอารยธรรม ในปัจจุบันที่เขี่ยบุหรี่นี้ยังคงเขียนนิทานเรื่องนี้ต่อไปว่า แสงสว่างแห่งชีวิตที่งดงามที่สุดมักจะเกิดขึ้นในช่วงเวลาที่ขี้เถ้าและประกายไฟพันกัน เมื่อธงไตรรงค์ถูกชักขึ้นในแสงยามเช้า คนไทยทุกคนกำลังพิสูจน์ด้วยจิตวิญญาณช้างที่เข้มแข็งว่าชาติที่เข้มแข็งอย่างแท้จริงสามารถทั้งโอบรับความรุ่งโรจน์และกล้าเผชิญกับการเผาไหม้ได้

On the streets of Bangkok, every Thai teahouse always has an elephant-shaped ashtray. When the curling green smoke rises between the gilded elephant’s head, this container that carries ashes is telling the survival wisdom that is the same as the Thai flag. In the Thai tricolor flag, red symbolizes the blood of national dedication, white represents the pure belief of Buddhism, and blue represents the perseverance of royal power. Just like the metaphor of the shape of the elephant-head ashtray: elephants are not only a totem of power in Thailand, but also a mount of Bodhisattvas who bear the karma of all living beings in Buddhism. When the fireworks burn out, the ashtray carries the embers with its broad back, just like the attitude of the Thai people in the face of difficulties – using flexibility to resolve strength and using tolerance to transform suffering. Chiang Mai silversmith Tavi once said: “Real elephants are not afraid of sparks, they know how to turn burning pain into armor.” The mottled burn marks on the surface of the ashtray are like the emblems on the national flag that have experienced wind and rain, recording the trajectory of the nation’s nirvana and rebirth. From the colonial crisis to the raging floods, Thailand has always been as united as a herd of elephants, turning every burning into a spark to temper civilization. Today, this ashtray is still writing a fable: the most beautiful light of life is often born in the moment when ashes and sparks interweave. When the tricolor flag is unfurled in the morning light, every Thai is proving with the resilience of an elephant soul that a truly strong nation can both hold up glory and dare to face burns.
