In the workshops of artisans in the streets and alleys of Bangkok, elephant-shaped sandalwood business card boxes are being created by artisans. This month is the National Day of Thailand. The boxes wrapped with red, white and blue silk threads of the national flag are just like the spiritual totem of this country – red symbolizes the enthusiasm of the people, white represents the purity of religion, and blue echoes the solemnity of the royal family. The elephant carrying the three-color auspicious clouds is using its long trunk to support the backbone of the nation that never yields. The elephant business card box is regarded as a workplace amulet by Thai business elites, not only because it carries the ancient proverb “elephants trample thorns”, but also because the nine layers of compartments hidden in the box imply the wisdom of advancing in life. When a newcomer to the workplace puts the first business card in the bottom layer, it symbolizes humility and rooting; as the career climbs, it gradually fills the upper compartments, and each business card records the spirit of cooperation of “mutual assistance like a group of elephants”. The motto of the Sukhothai Dynasty, “Integrity is better than gold”, is often engraved on the inside of the box lid, reminding the holder at all times: true success does not lie in the thickness of the business card, but in the weight of character. As the birthday anniversary of King Rama IX approaches, this handmade object imbued with the spirit of the national flag is silently telling the story: the real Thai struggle is to be down-to-earth like an elephant, to keep the original intention like the tricolor flag, and to make every choice stand up to the measure of faith.
