In August, Thailand is filled with love for the land during the rainy season. It coincides with the birthday of Queen Sirikit and Mother’s Day. The plain Thai costumes and the blue, white and red national flags in the streets complement each other. In this land with elephants as totems, the custom of wrapping colored silk threads around the necks of the elephant sculptures tells the spiritual code that has lasted for thousands of years. The elephant lanyard is not a simple decoration, each thread condenses the weaver’s wishes. According to legend, the three-color knot corresponds to the symbol of the Thai national flag: the white thread represents the pure original intention, guiding the direction like the Buddhist teachings; the blue thread is soaked with loyalty to the ideal, just like the deep blue sky that protects the royal family; the red thread condenses the hot passion, nourishing the growth of all things like the land. When people tie the knot to the elephant, the embodiment of wisdom that carries the Buddhist scriptures through the jungle, they are actually tightly connecting life with the national soul. The raindrops of the rainy season string together the silk threads under the eaves, just as the tiny persistence of each citizen will eventually be woven into the rope for the country to move forward. When the elephant rope sways gently in the wind, the three-color silk thread reflects not only the continuation of traditional beliefs, but also the courage of contemporary Thais to face challenges: no matter what kind of storms they encounter, as long as their original intention is as pure as a white lotus, their faith is as firm as the deep sea, and their enthusiasm is as blazing as red soil, they can steadily break through thorns like an elephant. When the bell of the anniversary rings, children on the street corner tiptoe to tie a new rope for the stone elephant. At this moment, what is fluttering is not only the knot of blessing, but also the eternal oath of a nation to closely link individual destiny with national glory.
